Cataract

Cataract

Cataract is a condition associated with clouding of the lens of the eye. As a result, the visit to the doctor is belated.

But a professional ophthalmologist could detect cataracts in the early stages, eliminating the trouble. However, the real truth is worth knowing.

Cataracts are not a serious medical condition. This is a very dangerous myth, because cataracts are a serious eye disease that most often affects people in old age. The lens is a natural lens, transparent and elastic. It can change its shape and focus very quickly, which allows you to see well both near and far. And due to clouding, only a small part of the light gets into the eye, as a result, a person sees blurry and indistinct. This becomes especially clear in bright light. The disease progresses over the years, the area of ‚Äč‚Äčopacity increases, vision is getting worse. In the advanced form of cataract, the swollen lens begins to occupy more and more of the anterior chamber of the eye, preventing the outflow of intraocular fluid. This increases the pressure inside the eye and leads to the development of glaucoma. The risk is also great because without treatment, vision can completely disappear irrevocably.

Cataracts appear in older people, young people do not. Most often, this problem is really age-related. It is directly related to the aging of the body. However, cataracts can appear at any age, even in childhood. Fortunately, this happens quite rarely, only in five cases per 100 thousand newborns. Cataracts can appear without reference to age as a result of somatic diseases. It can be diabetes mellitus or a physical effect on the eye - trauma, solar radiation.

The development of cataracts can be prevented. Prevention is only for the most complex forms of cataracts that appear as a result of any disease. In such a situation, the best that can and should be done is to treat that very provoking deviation and control the blood sugar level. But to prevent the development of age-related cataracts, which are also often hereditary, is almost impossible.

Cataracts can be defeated with drops. Those numerous attempts to create drops that would fight against lens opacities have failed. It is believed that they can sometimes slow down the development of cataracts, but this does not fundamentally solve the problem. That is why the main method of treating the disease is surgery to remove the clouded lens. It is replaced with a new, artificial one, created from special polymers. Today this is a proven operation that is performed in many clinics. If successful, it allows you to quickly restore a high-quality standard of living. Visual rehabilitation will take place 1-3 days after surgery, and physical limitations will last a maximum of 2-3 weeks.

Before removing a cataract, you must wait for it to mature. This is a fairly common statement that doctors constantly encounter. Once this approach was justified - the technical capabilities made it possible to work qualitatively only with matured cataracts. However, today the situation is different. Experts believe that the question of surgical intervention should be approached individually. It is important to consider what the patient is feeling. If a person works, then his vision should be high, not going down below 70-80%. But for an elderly person, the bar can drop to 30-40%.

Glasses are no longer needed after cataract removal. The new lens has solved the problem of light refraction and light transmission. However, there remains the question of accommodation, that is, clear vision of objects located at different distances from the glasses. This problem is usually solved by prescribing extra glasses for the patient. Recently, multifocal artificial lenses have become available, which can provide quality vision both near and far.

Cataracts can be defeated with the help of traditional medicine. It is believed that some grandmother's methods can be used to overcome cataracts. In fact, there are no drugs in nature that could restore the transparency of the lens. Its cloudiness is the result of an irreversible process associated with the proteins contained inside. And neither diet, nor massage, nor traditional medicine will help here. So there is no escape from the operation.

The cataract surgery is very long. Today, ophthalmologists can perform such a quick and painless operation as phacoemulsification. The implantation of the artificial lens will take about 15 minutes. This operation is performed under local anesthesia, while the patient himself does not experience any inconvenience. First, the surgeon will make a small incision with diamond instruments, up to 3 millimeters in length. Already through this tiny hole, further manipulations will take place. A special ultrasound probe will transform the lens into an emulsion, which will be removed from the eye. And a folded flexible lick will be inserted into the empty capsule, which will unroll and fix itself. It should be noted that such an intervention will do without suturing - the micro-incision is self-sealing.

After cataract surgery, you will have to stay in the hospital for a long time. Today, more and more often such an operation is performed on an outpatient basis. Without any hospitalization, the patient returns home after it. At the same time, there are almost no restrictions on physical activity, recovery takes place without pain. But this became possible with the advent of phacoemulsification. This technique made it possible to achieve good results.

A cataract is just a film on the eye. In fact, we are talking about the clouding of the lens located inside the eye. Ideally, this place should be transparent to let light through. And with cataracts, vision is obscured by fog, objects become dull and blurry. Other symptoms of cataracts are bifurcation, distorted images, reduced clarity, and yellow tints. The patient may start to change glasses or contact lenses frequently, trying to find a better option.

The cataract is removed with a laser. Many people, especially the elderly, do not remember the word ultrasound well, it is much easier for them to think about a laser. Perhaps the word itself is associated with something progressive and modern. In fact, the old lens is crushed with ultrasound. True, after some time, a film may appear behind the artificial lens - a secondary cataract. It can be removed with a laser in 5 minutes.

You can remove the cataract itself without changing the lens itself. Of course, this can be done, you just have to wear heavy glasses with thick glass, which will replace the lens. Such operations are a thing of the past; with the current level of surgery, you can give your eyes a high-quality artificial lens with a calculated optical power. In the eye, this element made of biocompatible material will feel as if it were native.

Artificial lenses are no different from each other. There are many varieties of this optical instrument from different manufacturers. They are distinguished by both properties and cost. If the decision on the operation is made, then the optical power of the lens must be calculated further. After this calculation, the ophthalmologist will already recommend the lens that best meets the needs of the eye. It is important to remember that the patient must receive a passport of his lens in his hands to be sure that it was he who was implanted.

After cataract surgery, the eye may still have poor vision. It also happens, only rumors should be separated from the truth. First of all, it is necessary to clarify what state of the eye was before the operation? Perhaps there was a pathology of the retina or optic nerve, then such a result is expected. In any case, before the operation, the patient will be warned of a possible outcome and a prognosis will be given. And what should a doctor do if a person still insists on surgery? Be that as it may, the sight that was lost directly due to cataracts will be returned.

The cost of ultrasound surgery can vary considerably. The operation itself is not only ultrasonic, but also seamless. It cannot be cheap. Indeed, in this case, disposable and high-quality foreign materials are used, and the device itself, an ultrasonic phacoemulsifier, costs a lot of money. When talking about a cheap ultrasound operation, they can mean tunnel extraction. It really costs much less, but the lens is removed mechanically, while suturing. So doctors can offer obsolete and cheaper technology under the guise of new technology, which is a hoax.

The safest way to do the operation is in famous clinics. Yes, in those clinics that are well known, perhaps the equipment will be the latest, and the walls have been repaired. However, this does not guarantee the end result. The main thing here is the specialist who will be entrusted with vision. Indeed, in inept hands, any device will become just a piece of iron. So, when contacting a doctor, it is worth asking him about his experience, specialization, and the number of operations performed.

Cataracts can appear due to excessive stress on the eyes. In fact, cataracts do not develop in any way from the intense work of the organs of vision - reading, sewing, watching TV.

Cataracts are contagious. This disease is not transmitted by methods known to science, however, there is a genetic predisposition.

Cataract is painful and ends in blindness. This disease progresses so slowly that a person often does not notice it. For most, this is a common disease associated with old age. But blindness can occur only if not treated. Recently, progress has made possible operations that allow full restoration of vision.

Cataracts can recur. Relapses in this case are impossible. After all, a cataract appears due to changes in the lens, and after the operation it becomes artificial, with completely different properties. So the majority of patients gain clear vision.
