Reading has long been a favorite hobby of people. Sales of specialized devices and such texts themselves are growing, but the classics are becoming less and less in demand.

This has led to the fact that in the era of the digital revolution, books are generally becoming less and less popular. And the e-books themselves endow with certain non-existent features, inventing myths and fables about them.

All free books are pirated. People are afraid to get involved with e-books, as free content in them will be pirated. In fact, there are many legitimate uses for books without paying for them. Even e-book stores have a list of free content. Usually we are talking about works with an expired copyright, and the author himself may agree to free distribution. The situation is similar with magazines - many editorial offices provide their archives in electronic format. So you can use the sources quite legally, with great comfort for yourself, in high-quality form. And books are offered in a variety of formats, from which you can choose the most convenient.

You cannot borrow e-books from the library. Modern libraries are adapting to today's realities. You can also read books in electronic form, and not only classics, but even the latest novelties. Today, large libraries in Moscow and St. Petersburg have access to a large database of texts in electronic form. They may be allowed to download to the reader. But such a file will have a limited expiration date, after which it will simply stop opening. And in the Russian State Library there is even an opportunity to rent the reader itself, from which it will be possible to read. Customers of the institution have the opportunity to connect via the Internet to the library system of a large online store. And it is very easy to use it, by entering the number of the library card, you can leave a request for the desired book. Soon, she herself will download the reader for two weeks, and after this period, access to the text will be blocked. And this is a very convenient service - you don't have to waste time going to a real library and returning a book.

The assortment of paper books is much larger than electronic ones. Over the past few years, life has proven the unfairness of such a statement. Today, almost all publications, issuing paper books, create at once in several formats and its electronic version. In the publishing business, it is generally becoming popular to publish only e-books; they simply cannot be found on paper. This path is often chosen by young authors who, in order to gain popularity, do not need to find funds to publish a circulation.

There are no children's books on this market. Many books are published for schoolchildren who can read freely. Their number is not much lower than that for adults. And these books are sold in the same e-books stores, in a special section. At the same time, there are also pictures here, as in the printed version. But as for the kids, the question is more complicated. The best thing for them will be a paper book, which you can read before going to bed and hold it in your hands. But this challenge is accepted by the publishers. Full-fledged applications for tablets and phones are created on the basis of children's books. And working with such texts becomes interactive! You can read and listen to the book, perform various tasks with the characters, make them move and watch their reactions, choose different options for the development of the plot. The App Store or Google Play has many options for such colorful and high-quality books.

The paper book appears on sale earlier than the electronic one. It turns out that in 95% of cases on the day a paper book goes on sale, you can also purchase an electronic copy. And this option is even more efficient. In moments after payment, the book will already be in the reader. But the paper version may not be in the store on the day of sales. And even a new fashion has appeared among publishers - to sell electronic versions of books even earlier than paper ones.

The book published in electronic form will always be available. It is worth realizing that as soon as an e-book appears, you should try to get it. The statement that the e-book will always be available is wrong. This is especially true of translation works. Under the terms of the agreement, Russian publishers may have limited rights to sell the book in its electronic version. Access will disappear after 3-5 years. J.K. Rowling's creations are a classic example. But paper books are no better in this regard. There are many examples when the circulation is bought out, but the new publisher is not going to release it. Even the most avid second-hand booksellers may not have the most interesting and rare books in their collection.

E-books can be read only on a specialized device, a reader. You can read such texts on the screen of a laptop, computer or tablet. There are online services that specialize in just such tasks. And many people even read from the screens of their mobile phones, which are growing in size lately, providing a better work with texts. I must say that reading books in pdf format, with color illustrations, is much more convenient to do on a tablet or laptop than on a small reader, which is not intended for graphics processing.

Buying e-books doesn't help the environment. In fact, this is not the case. Electronic writing really saves trees. After all, such books will not gather dust on the shelves and will not go to the landfill. They will save energy and reduce transportation costs, because nothing needs to be transported. At the same time, the environmental pollution associated with the transportation of books around the country will decrease. E-books do not face the problem of disposing of unsold copies. In Holland alone, more than a million books are shredded every year, and then toilet paper is created from them. Although the step is rational, it still leads to a waste of energy and resources. And it takes a huge number of trees to print newspapers, which is not the case with electronic publications. One weekly issue of the New York Times costs nature 75,000 trees.

DRM is a useful feature for e-book buyers. DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology is used by many major retailers to protect digital content. Usually we are talking about videos, music, images and e-books. But the presence of such technology also has its drawbacks. First of all, it makes the content more expensive. Complications with the computer and the use of such a purchase are also possible. But the most annoying thing is that DRM imposes restrictions on the use of the purchased item. So, the owner of a book protected by this technology cannot print it. Electronic books, on the other hand, were never intended to be a hidden treasure that must be so strictly guarded.

The e-book format war is endless. Do not think that books exist in many formats that your device cannot read. In the global market, EPUB is the dominant format. Basically, any company that decides to enter this market has to deal with this form of text presentation. This standard was created and managed by the International Digital Printing Foundation. The format is widespread and has many advantages and functions. In Russia, books often appear in fb2 format. But the most modern readers successfully work with all the most commonly used formats, there is nothing to be afraid of. And converters (including online) will quickly solve the problem of changing the format of an e-book to the required one.

Electronic books don't last long. It seems that these books are short-lived, because they are so easy to remove. But how many copies are there in the world? And the book lovers themselves prefer not to delete books, but to keep them in the "clouds". For example, when purchasing a book in the Amazon store, you always have access to the created library through different devices under your account. But paper counterparts can die due to water, fire, theft, negligence, or simply old age. In 48 BC. during the invasion of Julius Caesar, the Alexandrian Library with its hundred thousand volumes was burned. The Egyptians decided to burn their ships, but the fire spread to the pier, and then to the storage of priceless books. Carlisle's original manuscript, The French Revolution, was accidentally destroyed by a servant who threw the notes into the fire. Richard Burton's wife, against his will, destroyed the translation of the Garden of Fragrances after the death of her husband, considering it depraved. But the work has been going on for 10 years. In May 1933, the Nazis burned more than 25,000 books that, in their opinion, did not deserve the right to exist. Unlike paper versions, electronic ones do not age, do not burn, are not exposed to mold, do not rot or fall apart. Thanks to them, literature will survive.

If you publish a book in electronic format, then pirates will immediately steal it. Who Said You Can't Steal a Paperback Book? The scanner and proofreader will quickly convert the text into electronic form. Publishers don't know for months that their bestsellers are being pirated in digital libraries. So the problem of piracy is relevant for both paper and e-books.

Books are published in electronic form that are not good enough for a paper edition. This is a pretty old myth that plays down the weight of e-books. At the very beginning of the development of this direction, the authors really could not find a large publisher who would organize the release and sale of literature in this format. But now the situation has changed. Now major publishers are working hard with digital formats. Some press and educational institutions are completely switching to electronic literature. And many authors can publish even without major metropolitan publications, doing it on their own. And this approach is applicable not because the books are bad, but because it gives a small advantage and the ability to keep the profit, and not give it to publishers and online stores.

E-books and electronic publishing are killing the print industry. Is it constructive to look for a scapegoat? Saying e-books are killing print is like saying the oil industry is in danger from renewable energy sources. Printing faces many challenges. Those publications that survive will have to take into account the existence of e-books and transform their business model with this in mind. An original vision should be formed, according to which books are printed not only for profit, but also for the sake of enrichment and renewal of culture.

E-books are not yet ready for market leadership. When Benjamin Franklin spoke to the Queen of France, talking about electricity and its effects, she exclaimed: "But what is the use of such a discovery?" The scientist retorted coolly: "My dear Queen, what is the use of a newborn?" E-books are young, but their sales are already in the tens of millions of dollars a year. And that still doesn't account for the influx of free literature. More than two million books and electronic editions can be downloaded freely. These $ 100 million is a small part of the total volume of printed products. But e-books are the fastest growing segment in this business. The digital reading revolution is happening right here and now.
