These mammals have recently become increasingly domesticated, living next to humans, like cats and dogs. A new wave of popularity came in the late 70s.
Ferrets for the home are loved in America and Europe. Therefore, myths about ferrets should be debunked.
Ferrets are rodents. For some reason, many people are firmly convinced of this. In fact, the genus of ferrets, in Latin Mustela, belongs to the weasel family, like weasels, minks, otters, and badgers. This family is generally the most numerous in terms of the number of species and genera in the order of predators. The ferret is a pronounced predator, in its natural environment it feeds on small rodents, frogs, insects, and even birds. It is on this basis that the ferrets' diet should be formed at home. It is worth picking up animal products.
Ferrets, even those born at home, are wild and vicious creatures. Some people think that it is not worth keeping wild animals at home, this makes them angry. In fact, it is worth knowing that in domesticated conditions, special, domesticated ferrets are kept. They are also called ferrets. In no case can such animals be compared with the wild ferrets that live in the forest. Ferrets cannot exist without a man, even if such a ferret escapes, finding himself in the wild, he will live there no more than a week. In general, ferrets are well domesticated so that these skills are better developed for them, the cubs are even placed next to cats. As a result, animals become very attached to their owners, respond to their nickname, walk and sit on their hands with pleasure. Some ferrets even try to groom their owners by licking their faces. However, you shouldn't buy ferrets in unverified locations. After all, there is a risk of bumping into an animal from a fur farm. It will be very difficult to make an already affectionate pet out of it.
Ferrets stink. Perhaps this is the main myth about ferrets. In fact, it is worth separating two types of smells from these creatures. The first is the smell of a ferret in the rut. If you do not plan to further breed ferrets, then you can get rid of the smell with the help of castration. The second type of smell is popularly called "funyalka". It is released by the anal glands of the animal. The smell is slightly musky, but not strong. It is quite possible to get used to it. They say that by releasing a jet, a ferret can kill all the chickens in the chicken coop, this, of course, is not the case. In addition, the smell is not persistent and wears out well, but it intensifies in moments of fear and excitement. Ferrets need to periodically cleanse these glands, then, being in calm conditions next to a person, they will gradually unaccustomed to this ability, given by nature. Some veterinarians offer simple surgery to remove these glands. True, this kind of intervention is in any case difficult for animals, this is clearly not the best solution. The ferret also has glands under the eyes that cannot be removed. But if the animal is washed at least once a month, then almost certainly there will be no smell from it.
Ferrets, or domestic ferrets, are the same as honoriki. It is worth understanding this issue. Honorik is a hybrid between a male ferret and a female European mink. The name of the new creature came from the words "ho" from a ferret and "burrows" from a mink. In captivity, honoriki were first bred at the experimental base of the Biological Institute in Novosibirsk in 1978. Sometimes honoriks can be found in the wild. In terms of its external characteristics, the honorik looks more like a mink, and he took only ears from the ferret. They are larger than those of the mink and are framed by a light stripe. By nature, such a hybrid is rather aggressive and difficult to tame. Experiments on crossing the two genera were carried out for the sake of honorik fur, which turned out to be of high quality, surpassing the parents in this indicator. In the 1980s, an attempt was made to breed honoriks on an industrial scale, but the idea turned out to be so complicated that it never materialized.
Ferrets often develop rabies. In fact, there have been only 12 cases of rabies in ferrets since 1958. Speaking about the transfer of rabies, it is also impossible if vaccinations are done on time. But this statement is true for other animals as well.
Ferrets are very stupid. Many fear that nothing can be taught to these animals. But ferrets love to play, they are able to learn and quickly get used to their owners. The ferret is taught not to bite, to do various tricks and even to go to a special toilet.
Ferrets have poor vision. But this is true. These animals have very poorly developed eyesight, they are able to distinguish only two colors - blue and red.
Ferrets are not allowed for those who are allergic to cat or dog hair. Ferrets, like chinchillas, are considered non-allergenic animals. After all, these creatures do not have dandruff, which is exactly the source of allergies. Ferrets are the best choice for a pet for a person who is allergic to cat or dog fur.
Ferrets must be kept in a cage at all times. If these cute creatures are constantly kept in a cage, then there they will begin to get bored and faint. You need to find time to play with the ferrets, run around with them - and all outside the cage. But it is still advisable to keep the supervision, otherwise they can quickly arrange a pogrom in the apartment. So for the time of absence from home, this animal would be better placed in its usual home. Indeed, because of his irrepressible curiosity and desire to get into any crack, a ferret can only harm himself.
Ferrets are naturally aggressive. Don't confuse aggression with playfulness. Sometimes, during their fun, these animals can really bite a person. Ferrets by nature understand that they have thick skin, which is why they bite each other hard. They behave in a similar way with a person, but this is just a game. Yes, and it works for the first couple of months, then ferrets can be weaned. Real aggression is inherent in males, and even then, during the rut. If animals are castrated, then this problem will be solved. Domestic animals are friendly, curious, and funny creatures.
