Linoleum

In our country, the most common and common coating is linoleum. Let's try to consider the main misconceptions about linoleum.

Linoleum is a hazardous material. You can often come across the opinion that linoleum is a continuous "chemistry", it is, accordingly, certainly harmful to humans. First of all, it should be said that today such materials are produced on the basis of PVC - polyvinyl chloride, which is a synthetic polymer. All over the world, unlike in Russia, the concept of "linoleum" is not used, in everyday life the term is "PVC-coatings". Each such coating is issued with a hygienic certificate, which is mandatory and confirms the safety of products for humans. A voluntary certification system has also been adopted, during which manufacturers subject their products to the most thorough examination. For example, the world leader in the production of linoleum Tarkett, during such an inspection, received the ecological label "Leaf of Life" for its products, which is recognizable all over the world. Products with this symbol have the highest level of environmental safety for humans. So linoleum for the most part is environmentally friendly, there is a significant selection of high-quality manufacturing companies on the market, and even with eco-labeling of products. In general, linoleum was originally made exclusively from natural ingredients - resin, oil, flax. And the term owes its birth to the merger of two words - "flax" and "oil".

Linoleum has long been out of fashion. Manufacturers carefully monitor new trends, and do not stand still. More and more types of flooring are constantly appearing on the market, but despite this, buyers still choose linoleum. In terms of production volumes in Russia in 2008, it was PVC coatings that confidently took first place. Experts estimate the share of linoleum in the flooring market up to 40%. New colors and designs favor this. The times when linoleum imitated only wood were far in the past. Today you can choose a different color, pattern, texture of the coating, including the most luxurious ones. In linoleum, special mother-of-pearl multi-colored inserts can be used, which will create the effect of three-dimensionality of the picture. And nothing prevents you from realizing your fantasies, composing various colors and patterns, laying out unusual paintings on the floor.

Linoleum wears out quickly. The linoleum that is sold on the market today compares favorably with its predecessors. Today almost all brands are designed for use within 7-10 years, and the most "advanced" brands - generally up to 30. In production, the material can be created homogeneous or heterogeneous. Heterogeneous coatings are multi-layer sheets with a thickness of up to 6 mm. Usually, foamed PVC or fiberglass is applied to the back base, and transparent PVC is already on top, which is the upper working layer. In such a structure, the pattern is protected by a transparent layer, the thickness of which can vary from 0.15 mm for linoleum used in bedrooms and living rooms to 0.25 mm for wear-resistant samples used in the corridor, in the kitchen, in the hallway. Homogeneous linoleum is a single-layer material that is typically up to 3mm thick. The pattern of such a material is formed by the structure of the coating, so this linoleum has an interesting property - it can be updated by removing the top layer as when cycling parquet.

Linoleum is a cold material. In order to understand how warm the floor material is, the heat assimilation parameter is used. It shows how quickly the heat from the contacting surface (for example, the sole of the foot) is absorbed by the construction of the flooring material. Consequently, how warm the material seems to a person depends on this indicator and on its value. According to the norms, this indicator should not be more than 12 W / m². If the coating has such a parameter as that of ceramic tiles, then it quickly absorbs heat, which means they are cold to the touch. For linoleum, this indicator is influenced by its density, the presence and characteristics of the base layer. A textile-backed material that is made of polyester generally retains heat better. It should be noted that such a base is insensitive to temperature extremes and does not rot. And the index of heat assimilation for linoleum with such a base is 9-10 W / m².

Linoleum is easy to stretch and therefore tear. The modern coating is based on fiberglass. The presence of such a base and the multilayerness of linoleum led to the fact that the strength of the coating increased several times compared to what was previously used. In addition, the presence of fiberglass ensures the safety of the linear parameters of the material. Therefore, you should not be afraid that the linoleum will dry out or stretch, forming folds on the floor. New linoleum models are generally produced on the basis of foamed PVC, this technology allows the components to be more firmly connected to each other, which further increases the strength of the coating.

When laying linoleum, seams are noticeable. This problem really existed 20 years ago. This was because there was a limited selection of rolled linoleum on the market with a width of up to 2 meters. But today manufacturers are already offering samples of rolls 5 meters wide, which is usually enough for most rooms. In cases where joints cannot be avoided anyway, modern cold welding techniques can be effectively used. In this case, a special glue is used, which not only connects the canvases, but also actually melts and solders their edges. Thanks to this technology, a high reliability of the connection is ensured, while the seam is almost invisible.
