Migraine

Migraine is a neurological disorder accompanied by excruciating attacks of headache (episodic or regular) in one half of the head. At the same time, there is no obvious damage to the head or brain, and the origin of the pulsating pains is explained by the vascular headache, and not by tension.

Thus, migraine attacks are not associated with pressure. The very origin of the word migraine is associated with the Greek word hemicrania, which literally means "half of the head".

There are several long-standing misconceptions about migraines that interfere with proper treatment and patient-doctor contact. Let's consider the most revealing myths about this disease.

Migraine occurs due to spasm of blood vessels in the brain. In fact, with migraine, the vessels of the brain expand, and the sensation of painful pulsations in the head is caused by a decrease in the pain threshold.

Migraine is caused by psychological factors. It would be wrong to believe that stress, general emotional instability can cause this disease. Migraine is an organic neurological disease. And psychological signs can only influence its course. For example, stress can trigger an attack, and depression can favor the development of chronic migraines.

Migraines are not dangerous. But this is the truth. The course of the disease in the majority is quite favorable. Only complications from migraine are dangerous, mainly migraine stroke. There is no direct threat from the disease, although it is certainly exhausting. The danger can be the abuse of painkillers, which can lead to disruptions in the functioning of internal organs.

If a person has severe headaches, then this is one of the signs of a dangerous brain disease. Undoubtedly, it is worth paying attention to headaches, it may well be a disease. However, not always. Intense head pain is most often a common migraine. But dangerous brain tumors may not be accompanied by pain at all or proceed with moderate pain.

Migraine is a complete simulation. For many, the association with the word migraine is cutesy ladies who do not know what to do with themselves. It seems that a normal person leading a healthy lifestyle cannot have this. But it turns out that migraine is one of the most common deseptic diseases, one of the ten most frequent. Among women, this disease is generally included in the five diseases most affecting life.

Migraine is a female disease. Indeed, it has been proven that women get migraines 2-3 times more often than men. However, 6% of the strong half suffer from this disease, and in absolute terms this is a very large figure.

The patient is always aware of the presence of a migraine. In fact, migraine is still very poorly understood, doctors do not really know its nature and diagnostic methods. In the United States, a study was conducted, during which it was found that half of people with migraines were not even aware of their diagnosis. So the absence of headaches does not mean anything yet.

The symptoms of migraine are simple, anyone can identify it in themselves. In fact, even a doctor will not be able to immediately diagnose this disease. The specialist needs some experience. To make sure that the patient really has a migraine, it is necessary to exclude many other possible diseases with similar symptoms.

A headache is pain directly in the brain. It turns out that the brain does not have pain receptors, so it basically cannot get sick. Pain occurs in the vessels of the dura mater and at the endings of the trigeminal nerve.

A migraine is just a headache. This disease has several forms of manifestations, and headache is only one of them. Today, migraine is considered as a neurological disorder, which proceeds generally favorably, but can be complicated, and therefore requires specialist supervision.

Migraine is one of the signs of vegetative dystonia. In fact, on the contrary, it is the syndrome of autonomic dystonia that is a symptom of migraine. Symptoms of dystonia are palpitations, heavy breathing, sweating, weight and sleep disorders, and emotional disturbances. All of them may well coexist with migraine, as the frequency of its attacks increases, these disorders of the body's work may even progress.

Triptans are bad for the heart. Triptan is the most effective migraine medicine. Their release is accompanied by the strictest security controls. At normal doses, there is no harm to the heart from their use. But with severe pathologies of the heart, with insufficient functioning of the kidneys and liver, as well as with arterial hypertension, it is still not recommended to use triptans.

If the headache is not relieved by triptans, then the disease is not a migraine. Triptan drugs have different efficacy. In addition, do not forget about the individual characteristics of the organism. There are no universal medicines, what works for you may not help another patient.

The cause of migraine headaches is a jump in blood pressure. A headache can only be caused by a sharp and pronounced jump in blood pressure. A slight increase in pressure is unlikely to cause an attack. However, the presence of increased pressure during a migraine indicates, most likely, the activation of the autonomic nervous system.

Migraine headaches can be caused by increased intracranial pressure, for example, after head injuries. It is often believed that a concussion can cause migraines. However, the characteristics of headaches that appear due to an increase in intracranial pressure (this may be, for example, a consequence of hydrocephalus), differ significantly from migraine headaches. To diagnose intracranial hypertension, it is necessary to conduct magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, as well as undergo an examination by an ophthalmologist and do a spinal (lumbar) puncture. Traumatic brain injuries can indeed be accompanied by headaches, but doctors attribute them to psychological reasons, rather than damage to some organs, structures.

Migraine headaches can be associated with arachnoiditis. Arachnoiditis is a disease accompanied by inflammation of the arachnoid membrane of the brain. But the facts proving the connection between arachnoiditis and headaches that occur have not yet been found.

For the treatment of migraine attacks, it is effective to use antispasmodic drugs that relieve vasospasm. Many patients take no-shpu as a medicine. However, as mentioned above, vasospasms are not the cause of migraines. The same no-spa has an effect on the gastrointestinal tract and on the urinary tract, but not on the vessels of the brain. The effectiveness of antispasmodics is based on improving the functioning of the digestive organs.

"Vascular" drugs make the pauses between attacks longer. Scientific studies have not found a link between the course of migraine and "vascular" drugs.

It is impossible to fight a migraine, you have to get used to it, put up with it. There are many drugs and non-drug drugs in the world to fight and prevent this disease. It is quite possible that one of them is right for you.
