Computer and vision

When working on a computer, we obtain most of the information visually. Which of them is true and which is fiction - we will figure it out.

If you buy a good LCD monitor, you don't have to worry about your eyesight. This is partly true. Liquid crystal monitors really work in a mode that is more gentle on our eyes. But there is also a flicker on them. And this means that even if you can afford to buy a very expensive and high-quality LCD monitor, you still need to take 5-7 minutes breaks every hour. At this time, you can do exercises for the eyes: move them from side to side, in a circle, look alternately at a close object, and then at a distant one. These exercises will ensure your eyes have a long life without glasses. If you are already wearing glasses, eye charging will at least stop further deterioration in vision. Well, if you find it very difficult to force yourself to do this kind of exercise, just move around, chat with colleagues, give your eyes a break.

If the screen is widescreen, your eyes will get tired faster. It is a myth. In fact, the visible horizontal zone for a person is larger than the vertical one, so the eyes get tired in the same way as when working with a regular screen.

It is better to work at a computer with a fluorescent lamp. This is a common opinion. Most often, we see fluorescent lamps next to computers. But this is a mistake. In fact, an ordinary "Ilyich's lamp" will be optimal when working with a computer. And it is best to place it on the ceiling.

The lamp should be near the computer. This is partly true. But not just next to him, but to his left. With this positioning of the lamp, the shadow from your hands will not fall on the keyboard. It is also unacceptable to place the light source behind the monitor. In this case, the rays of light will hit you directly in the eyes, and this is also harmful to our vision. If the lamp cannot be moved in any way, try at least so that it shines upwards - this will somehow reduce the harm done to your eyes.

It doesn't matter where you put your monitor. Wrong. For example, if your monitor is facing a window, glare will be reflected on its surface. Namely, they cause great harm to your eyes. Therefore, it is very important that the window (or other light source) is positioned to the left of your monitor. If this is not possible, purchasing an anti-glare screen may be the solution. Also, do not choose "exotic" places for the monitor - lift it up to the ceiling or hide it under the table. Optimally position the monitor so that your eyes are in line with the center of the monitor. But the distance to the monitor must be at least 50 cm (arm length). If there are no vision problems, the distance can be increased up to 70 cm.

Nothing bad will happen if you work a little at the computer in the dark. This is also a myth. If you remember, even the school desks in Soviet times were painted light green or light blue. This was done so as not to strain the eyes with a sharp contrast between the white sheet of the notebook and the color of the desk. The same thing happens when working on a computer in complete darkness. The contrast between the bright light of the monitor screen and the darkness in the room makes our eyes strain over and over again. Eyes look at the dark keyboard, then at the bright screen, back at the keyboard. Such abrupt transitions from light and shadow can undermine the best vision, unless you have learned to type with the blind. Another thing is surprising. Scientists in New York argue that if you decide to watch a movie or read a book in the dark, it will not in the least impair your vision. Your eyes will only feel tired after a while due to the overextension of the eye muscles. But this will not affect vision in any way.

Pregnant women cannot work on the computer. This is an exaggeration. Computers of the past generation were indeed more harmful to pregnant women. But not because they have a bad effect on the vision of expectant mothers, but because they had more radiation. Modern monitors have a little more radiation than a pocket calculator, and then only from the back of the screen. Therefore, today the danger from working with a computer for pregnant women consists only in the stress caused by being in a forced position for a long time, and they have the same effect on vision as in other people.
