The "animal cycle" came to Tibet from China. Researchers disagree on this issue. Some believe that back in the 7th century, when the Chinese princesses, who became the wives of Songtsen Gampo (ruler of Tibet), brought texts on medicine, astronomy and astrology from the Celestial Empire, they began to designate the years with the names of 12 animals (although the 60-year cycle was not yet complete borrowed up to the XI century).
