Even in prosperous America, about 25 million people suffer from urinary incontinence (incontinence). Limited information gives rise to misconceptions and myths about this problem.

Urinary incontinence is a problem exclusively for the elderly. The opinion is quite popular that such a disease is associated exclusively with the old age of a person. Indeed, in old age this problem is common, but it also occurs in young people. Urinary incontinence can be a harbinger of many diseases that are not directly related to either age or gender. Occasionally incontinence can be associated even with acute respiratory viral infections, the common cold. So the direct link between incontinence and old age is an unproven myth.

Incontinence is a disease. It is wrong to perceive incontinence as a disease. Rather, it is a condition that manifests itself along with various diseases. Incontinence can be perceived as a symptom. It usually disappears after the underlying disease is cured, and it can also be a temporary reaction to an unusual condition of the body due to pregnancy or a cold. Sometimes patients are surprised that they are advised not to get rid of incontinence, but from a completely different disease. The position of the World Health Organization in recent years is that incontinence is recognized as a disease of a public nature. In other words, it is very common among people and makes life difficult for them.

Incontinence is more common in men than in women. This myth is debunked by relentless statistics. In women, urinary incontinence is more common, especially in the mild stage, than in men. This fact can be explained from the point of view of anatomical differences in the structure of the genitourinary system in men and women. It turns out that at different stages of life, every fourth woman faces this problem and only every eighth man. And the representatives of the stronger sex are more inclined to keep silent about this problem than ladies.

The problem is easily solved with absorbent products. First of all, it's worth talking about how easy it is to put on such products. And after childbirth, the pelvic muscles are weakened and do not work properly. That is why periodically urinary incontinence can occur in the postpartum period. But it usually lasts from 6 to 8 weeks. During this time after childbirth, the body restores the work of all its organs and systems. With the return of the body to its previous shape, some problems go away, including incontinence. Recovery can be accelerated with the previously mentioned pelvic strengthening exercises.

People with bed rest will develop pressure sores due to urination. Irritations, diaper rash and bedsores due to urinary incontinence more often appear in immobile patients, but this is not an axiom. The condition of the skin is influenced by such unfavorable factors as increased moisture, temperature and their constant exposure. With proper care, constant change in the position of the patient's body, the use of breathable absorbent pads, complications can be avoided. And although maintaining a good condition of the skin of patients in a motionless mode requires large and regular efforts, it is quite possible.

For bladder problems, it is best to avoid strenuous exercise. Controlling your weight is important, as it will help keep all organs and systems functioning in good condition. And although increased intra-abdominal pressure leads to increased urine leakage, the other extreme, obesity, aggravates and provokes incontinence. But the symptoms are more pronounced. When choosing loads and physical exercises, determining their intensity, it is worth consulting with a trainer and doctor. It is better to use urological pads during exercise. Women, according to indications, may need a gynecological tampon of the maximum size.

In adulthood, it makes no sense to fight urinary incontinence. Usually, patients are ashamed to talk about their problem and do not go to the doctor with it for years. But the longer you try to resolve incontinence on your own, the greater the discomfort will be. The problem itself will worsen. So, the weak tone of the pelvic muscles will not improve on its own, you need to actively work on this.

The only way to relieve incontinence is with medication or surgery. Many specialists help people with these symptoms through physiotherapy. At the same time, weak muscles and organs of the pelvis are actively processed.

Incontinence is caused by drinking a lot of fluids. The simple idea that drinking water provokes an overactive bladder is quite popular. For this reason, many people even limit their water intake as a way to combat incontinence. In fact, it can lead to dehydration and constipation. This, in turn, will further worsen the situation and will provoke urine leakage. It will be correct to distribute the fluid intake evenly throughout the day. You should drink in small sips and a little for each approach. And it's best to limit your intake of coffee and citrus juices.

Night waking up to go to the toilet is the norm. The need to urinate is markedly reduced at night. Most people sleep 6-8 hours without the urge to urinate. Do not drink a lot of fluids in the evening, 4 hours before bedtime. Some drugs, for example, for the treatment of arterial hypertension, are also diuretics. Such medications may make you want to go to the toilet at night. If there is such a problem, then it is better to inform the cardiologist about it. He may choose a different treatment regimen.

Incontinence problems are caused by the shrinkage of the bladder with age. Features of both the bladder and the urethra can change throughout life. But the volume of this organ practically does not change. The capacity can only be affected by chronic diseases, but not by age itself.

Urinary incontinence is a rare problem. Unofficially, there are 200 million people with this problem. Many cases are simply not registered and not fully diagnosed.

Incontinence cannot be triggered by sounds. In fact, coughing, laughing, like jumping, can trigger unwanted urination. It is caused by a lack of coordination between the brain and spinal cord. The mind perceives a sharp unexpected sound as a command to discharge.

Bedwetting in children is a psychological parenting problem. It is believed that children deliberately refuse to go to the toilet or use the potty, demonstrating their protest. This belief confirms the fact that enuresis is accompanied by scandals, abuse and stress. But the child does not urinate on purpose. Moreover, this is his big trouble, because of which he is very worried. And stress leads to more incontinence. So any negative comments from adults or peers only contribute to an inferiority complex. It is correct to simply praise the child for "dry" nights and not comment on "wet" ones.
