Watermelon

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is an annual plant in the pumpkin family, cultivated for its tasty, juicy and sweet, bright red flesh. Differs in thermophilicity and drought resistance, has a creeping, branching stem up to 2-3 meters in length, a large spherical fruit. There are 4 known types of watermelon, all native to southern Africa, where it is still found in the wild.

This watermelon is bred in tropical and temperate countries around the globe, the most common in China, America and Russia (the Volga region and a number of southern regions). The best varieties in Russia: Kamyshinsky, Astrakhan, monastic, Mozdok.

Is watermelon a berry? Seasoned crossword puzzles know watermelon like a berry. However, botanists do not quite agree with this definition. They consider a berry a fruit with a thin skin, while a watermelon has a rather serious skin, as a result of which it received the definition of a false berry (for professionals - pumpkin).

The best watermelons are Astrakhan. Rather, the most popular and famous not only in Russia but also abroad. The phrase "Astrakhan watermelon" has long become a household name, applied to the designation of any large tasty watermelon.

A delicious watermelon is very difficult to identify. Indeed, for this you need to know many different secrets of choosing this sweet berry. For example, such as the presence of a dark orange spot on the side of a watermelon, a dry tail, a shiny peel with the brightest and most contrasting color, which is difficult to pierce with a finger, a sonorous sound when tapping the fruit. It is also known that the lighter a large watermelon, the more ripe it is.

There are no seedless watermelons. Not in our time. Several years ago, American scientists bred a new variety of watermelon - small, with a thin skin and without seeds. Seedless watermelons are also quite common in Israel.

The flesh of watermelons is exceptionally red. In fact, there are watermelons with yellow flesh. True, in taste and shape of the seeds, they are very reminiscent of a pumpkin, which may not please all watermelon lovers. The yellow color in the watermelon appeared after numerous experiments with the seeds of the wild watermelon, whose pulp just has a yellow color.

Watermelon is good for your health. Folic acid, presented in watermelon pulp like no other product of the plant world, has a huge impact on the processes of blood formation and maintains a delicate balance of chemical processes in the human body. In addition, watermelon has a diuretic and tonic properties, removes harmful substances from the body (for example, those from which kidney stones are then formed) and excess cholesterol. Long-term consumption of watermelon pulp helps to cope with chronic gastritis. Watermelon is also useful for expectant mothers and present mothers who are breastfeeding their babies - it replenishes the loss of water and iron in the body, both for the mother and the child. For patients with diabetes, watermelon is practically the only sweetness that they can eat without harming their fragile health.

Watermelon can be used as a cosmetic. The gruel and juice obtained from the pulp of watermelon have a good effect on dry skin, and the frozen pulp itself can be used to tone the skin of the face, neck and décolleté.

Watermelon rinds are useless. In fact, it is possible to prepare and take decoctions from dried watermelon peels all year round, which have no less strong diuretic effect than fresh juicy pulp. In addition, you can prepare a delicious and nutritious dish that will appeal to both adults and children from watermelon peels - candied fruits.

Watermelon can remove acne and freckles. To do this, it is enough to crush, and then grind the watermelon seeds together with water in a ratio of 1:10 and apply the resulting composition for 20 minutes on the defective skin areas.
